1. It's all about traffic

In this newsletter I try to cover all aspects of creating
a profitable online business.
Most advice revolves around affiliate programs, but I
try to cover information that can be used in any type of
business.
Whether you have your own product, service, promote
affiliate programs, or work with drop-shippers.
I try to provide information for any situation.
One thing that I've come to realize over the past few
years of running a business online is that there is
one fundamental topic that is at the core of just about
EVERY successful online business:
Traffic...and lot's of it!
I'm sorry but it's difficult to make many sales with
only a few visitors a day clicking past your site.
Promoting your products and your website should be your
number one priority online.
I say "should" because I know so many that skip this
part. We want to search for the "easy way" of making
money online, and let's face it ... getting lot's of
quality traffic is NOT easy.
So we try to buy our way to instant, massive traffic,
or spend too much time searching for the "magic bullet"
that will send us millions of visitors for free.
The problem is these just don't work. I didn't say they
don't exist because there are many people out there
trying to sell you that "magic bullet."
What is required is a systematic, persistent approach
to promoting your website. Sure there are some things
that will work faster and better than others, but the
fact is that you need to keep working all aspects of
promotion.
The Net changes so fast and if you spend all of your
efforts on one method of promotion you'll be out of
business the minute this method stops working.
A great example of this is the search engines. From
time to time they change algorithms, or restructure
themselves to exist under completely new business
models.
If ALL you've been doing is working on top search
engine rankings, and your most popular one changes
something you can literally drop from several hundred
visitors a day to zero.
One great example of this is the latest changes at
Yahoo!. They are now giving top ranking to Google.com
search results when your prospective customers search
using Yahoo.com.
When this change went into effect, I had a happy and
a somewhat unhappy reaction to it.
The unhappy reaction was due to a website that I had
recently submitted to the Yahoo! directory at the
cost of $299. This site is now pretty much gone to
searchers.
But, on a much happier note, AffiliateMatch is now
in 1st or 2nd place for those searching for affiliate
programs!
I say 1st or 2nd because Allan Gardyne and I trade
spots every once in awhile.
I've been getting a ton of traffic for some time
now from Google, and it is now much higher due to
the Yahoo! change.
The point of all this is that had I put all my eggs
in one basket and only had a site that was optimized
for the Yahoo! directory, I'd be in a world of hurt
right now.
The key is to use several different methods and work
on those methods systematically and patiently, and
you WILL get to the point where you have a ton of
traffic coming to your site each month.

2. Have you started building a relationship yet?

Are you still trying to make money online using "hit and
run" techniques?
By this I mean promoting affiliate programs by sending
the traffic directly to the merchant's website.
Typically you see this in ezine and website advertising.
The problem with this is you are doing nothing to leverage
the money you are spending for the advertising.
Only a small percentage will actually click through and
visit the merchant's site, and fewer still will decide to
purchase while they are there.
If they don't purchase right then and there you have lost
a chance to sell to that visitor.
What should be done is an attempt to start building a
relationship with those visitors. Instead of sending
them through your affiliate link in hopes they'll buy
something, send them to your website where you can try
to get their email address.
You can even advertise a free email course that you've
written and simply put the subscribe address in the ad.
You will get a much higher response to a free offer,
plus you will have a chance to communicate with them
over a period of time to let them become more
comfortable with you.
When you do this you will have a much better chance of
building a successful, long-term business that will
earn you additional income for years to come.
